If 24V and 48V are the "normal voltages" of industrial cabinets and storage systems, then 110VDC is another world entirely. Metro and rolling stock run on 110V battery banks; the trip circuit power for substation breaker operation is also 110VDC. You don't see this bus every day — but once you build equipment on it, you can't avoid it.
The problem: the electronic loads hanging off that 110V bus — onboard displays, train radio, signal acquisition units, lighting modules — almost all run on 12V. Wire them straight to 110V and they burn out. A linear regulator can't survive that voltage drop. The MDE240-110S12 does exactly this job: taps the 110V bus and delivers an isolated, clean 12V rail.
Why the 66-154V range is so wide
Rated at 110VDC, it actually works from 66 to 154VDC. That range is deliberate: a 110V battery pack sags to the mid-60s when depleted, and charges up past 140V during boost charging; railway rolling stock also sees brief bus dips during startup. The module holds regulation across the entire range, with no need for a front-end pre-regulator.
12V at 20A — plenty of headroom
12V at up to 20A, 240W continuous. Onboard displays, radio, networking, cameras — all the 12V loads on a vehicle can be consolidated onto this one module. Set-point accuracy ±2%, line/load regulation ±0.5%, ripple 120mV P-P — quiet enough for onboard electronics and signaling.
On a 110V bus, isolation is non-negotiable
The 110V bus isn't "quiet low-voltage." When a vehicle starts, a breaker trips, or the traction system switches, spikes of several hundred volts ride the line. This module isolates input-to-output at >1500VDC, input-to-case >1050VDC, output-to-case >500VDC, with 200MΩ insulation. That's the baseline safety gap between primary power and secondary electronics in rail and power-industry equipment. The sensitive 12V boards downstream survive primary-side surges intact.
Military-grade temperature range
Railway vehicles and outdoor substations are far harsher environments than ordinary industrial cabinets. Industrial case temperature -25°C to +85°C; Military I -40°C to +85°C; Military II -55°C to +85°C. A winter cab in the Northeast or an outdoor substation in the desert — all within design range.
Protection you can count on
Five built-in protections: input undervoltage, input overvoltage, over-temperature, output over-current (120% limit), output short-circuit. Under a fault the module goes into safe mode rather than destroying itself, and recovers automatically once the fault clears. For vehicles and substations where you can't just open the cabinet and service it, that matters as much as the electrical specs.
Where it belongs
Metro, locomotive, tram and light-rail rolling stock: taking 12V off the 110V vehicle battery bus
Substations and switchgear: powering protection, signaling and monitoring from the DC110V operating supply
DC switchboards and power-plant auxiliary systems needing a 12V rail
Industrial sites with a 110V high-voltage DC bus
Anywhere there's 110V DC up front and clean 12V required downstream
In the MDE 100-300W lineup, the MDE240-110S12 is the 110V-input, 12V-output workhorse. Need 24V or 48V output? The series has it. Custom designs available.
