Open any industrial control board, data acquisition unit or compact PLC, and you'll spot a pattern: there are always two voltages on the board — 5V and 24V.
5V feeds the digital side: MCU, FPGA, comms chips, logic. Not a lot of current, but it needs clean, low-noise power. 24V feeds the analog and drive side: sensors, relay coils, solenoids, opto-isolators. Also not a lot of current, but it has to be tough enough to survive inductive spikes.
The traditional approach is two modules in the cabinet: one 24V-to-5V, another 24V-to-24V. It takes space, costs more, and is one more thing to debug. The MDE175-24D05&24 puts both rails in one package.
Two independently regulated rails
Input is 24VDC (wide 18-36V range). Two outputs:
Rail 1: +5V at up to 15A — powers the digital core, ripple held to 100mV
Rail 2: +24V at up to 4.16A — powers sensors, relays and drive circuits, ripple 200mV
Each rail regulates independently. Load steps on one rail don't cross-couple to the other. When the digital side does heavy computation, the 24V rail stays put; when a relay coil kicks on the drive side, the 5V rail doesn't dip. Both rails are ±2% accurate with ±0.5% regulation.
Why not just one buck followed by an LDO
People ask: can't I use one 24V-to-24V module and drop 5V from it with an LDO?
You can't. At 15A on the 5V rail, the LDO dissipates nearly 300W across a 19V drop — it destroys itself. Efficiency is terrible and the cabinet can't shed the heat. That's why both 5V and 24V must come from independent DC-DC stages, not linear drop-downs. The MDE175-24D05&24 has two independent conversion stages inside, delivering 84% overall efficiency, cooled by the metal case.
Same isolation and protection as the single-channel parts
Despite being dual-output, isolation matches the rest of the MDE series: input-to-output >1500VDC, input-to-case >1050VDC, output-to-case >500VDC. Five protections cover both rails: input undervoltage, input overvoltage, over-temperature, output over-current, output short-circuit. Under a fault the module goes into safe mode and recovers automatically once the fault clears.
You save more than the cost of one module
Replacing two single-channel modules with one dual-channel part saves:
Cabinet space — one less module slot
Wiring — one less input harness
SKUs — one less part number to manage
Failure points — one less thing to service
Footprint matches the rest of the MDE line: 118 × 110 × 29.5mm, rail/pin-mount.
Where it belongs
Inside industrial control boards, compact PLCs and remote IO
Data loggers, industrial gateways, edge boxes — 5V for the main board, 24V for the external I/O
Rolling stock electronics — 5V for displays/comms, 24V for control circuits
Outdoor comms and monitoring cabinets — 5V for the main board, 24V for sensors and heaters
Any board that needs both a 5V digital rail and a 24V drive rail
In the MDE 100-300W lineup, the MDE175-24D05&24 is the 24V-input dual-output model. The series also offers MDE175-24D12&24 (12V & 24V dual output). Custom dual-voltage combinations available.
